A valve is a device on many instruments which redirects the airflow into a separate section of tubing before returning to the main tubing. While depressed, this "extra" tubing is in use, therefore increasing the length of working tubing and lowering the pitch. On almost all modern horns, the valves work in the same way: the 2nd valve lowers the pitch by one half step, the 1st valve lowers the pitch by one whole step (two half steps), and the 3rd valve lowers the pitch by one and a half steps (three half steps). If there is a fourth valve, it will lower the pitch by two and a half steps (5 half steps).

What's more, after the Second World War, owning to the invention of new materials such as polymeric material, stainless steel, lubricating material, the old plug valve and butterfly valve gain the new application and the ball valve and diaphragm valve develop quickly.

Full port valves are used when there is a requirement of free flow rate of fluids. This valve has an oversized ball with a big hole to allow huge quantities to flow through it. But when there is a requirement of high pressure in the flow, reduced port valves are preferred. A common example is the pipe heads that are used for a car wash. As we require pressure in water flow, this type of valve is used in them. Trunnion ball valves have a disc or anchoring above and below the valve generally suitably when there is a large and high pressure flow rate requirement.
